geek Yesterday was all Chrome Chrome Chrome

Google Chromeand I like most, at the very least, scanned their eyes over the blogoscoped article Google Chrome, Google’s Browser Project then skipped along to the flip through the much talked about work of Scott McCloud's Google on Google Chrome - comic book. My initial thoughts were "oh shirt another browser to contend with" ... 2nd "thought was wheres the coffee?" and with that I continued on with my day and didn't give it another thought...

This morning when I scrolled through the overnight tweets I caught glimpses of '...Chrome...' and when I flicked throught my RSS feeds it was, unsurprisingly due to the overnight release of the first beta version, mostly all Chrome Chrome Chrome... so I thought I'd check it out while the coffee brewed....

I trotted along to:
http://www.google.com/chrome

downloaded the installer... grrrr! Installers are a personal quirk of mine... give me the whole shebang all at once thank you muchly © Mazeguy

I grumbled my way through the install process... the lack of progress indication was irksome... I was starting to feel disgruntled but quickly decided it was perhaps more a case of low caffeine levels than Chrome quirks so I shot off to get my morning bucket. I came back a little happier for the quick trip only to find the install had hung on the importing of my FireFox data simply because it was open.... grrr!

Google Chrome: Close FireFox Before Importing

Did I miss the prior notification to close FF before install or was it not mentioned... note to self: Don't install without at least one coffee under ones belt. I begrudgingly closed FireFox and all 64 of my open tabs and continued with the install... the lack of progess indication was now grating on my nerves... I was expecting a % or progress bar... all I was seeing was a motion bar which reminded me, for some bizarre reason, of KITT.

To keep my fingers occupied and out of trouble, and to stop my mind from wandering I returned a couple of calls from yesterday, occassionally I would spin my chair around oh so casually, just every now and then, to peek at how Chrome was progressing... just as I hung up from the last call on my to do list there it was in all it's shining glory! All bookmarks imported and accounted for complete with my bookmarks toolbar from FF... woohoo!

Google Chrome: Bookmarks Toolbar

After a bumpy start I was off to a great fuss free start. I have to admit I also liked the way Chrome wasn't presumptuous in assuming, and setting, my default Search engine as Google (like some do with Yahoo!)... courteous software is a rare find these days © Mazeguy

I fired up a few pages and Chrome coped remarkably well, in fact it faired a lot better than I thought it would... it was indeed as fast as others had mentioned... even faster than FF3. Normally this would present a dilemma as to if to make the transition across, as had happend in the past e.g. from Avant to FireFox, but this wasn't going to be an issue as FireFox holds my loyality with two plugins Web Developer and IE Tabs.

I use multiple browsers every day often so while Chrome isn't going to take the role of my main browser, it will easily nudge itself into position 3rd position, and perhaps, in time, take the place of Opera which occupies 2nd.
