geek Sticky Situation...

The other day Andy made me a ruler, not the smack you over the knuckles kind of ruler... it's a desktop ruler smiley © Mazeguy You use them to measure image / table / box / window / space dimensions etc, if you create images or have your own website then a desktop ruler is without doubt a "must have" program for your quick launch menu... and yes, I know it sounds geeky, dorky and pointless but they most definitely aren't smiley © Mazeguy

Once you've had a desktop ruler and realised just how dang handy they are (and that you're life can never be ruler-less again) you too will perhaps start to become ruler critical over their limitations.. anyways, I was muttering to Andy one day about my ruler issues including the fact the one I had kept crashing on me for no known or logical reason smiley © Mazeguy and he offered to make me one...and it's seriously freaking cool!

My Ruler @ Andy

The ruler Andy made has loads more twiddly bits than my other ruler did... it can go transparent, I can snap it to the edge of the window, rotate it round from the exact position, easily set the length of it etc and knock me down and paint me purple it even gives the RGB or HEX values (to clipboard) etc... but alas while perhaps it is close to being perfect, it is I who is not smiley © Mazeguy The problem (for me) with having such a cool new desktop ruler is trying to remember the key combinations required to be able to use the snazzy new features and it's not like they are hard... heck they are dead simple e.g. TAB rotates it, T makes it transparent, W sets the width, S snaps it to the cursor positon over a window etc.. it's not like they are finger or brain benders is it? but remember I cannot... in my partial defence I would like to add that there are 13 individual ones to remember... a whole 13 of them! smiley © Mazeguy

Stickies by Zhorn SoftwareI tried adding the user controls help blurb to a notepad document but then I could never find the txt file when I needed it, I also tried adding it to the top of my most frequently used TexNotes documents but found the same thing, it was never in easy reach when I needed it... then I just gave up and decided to grab a Post-It® note and smack that on my monitor... all good until I realised I'd run out smiley © Mazeguy Completely unimpressed I stomped around the net looking to order some more... then knock me down and paint me purple I had a huge doh! moment....virtual desktop Post-It® notes instead! I Google'd for sticky notes and grabbed myself a handful of programs, some were basic and some quite complex... hard to believe for a virtual Post-It® note I know but it's true smiley © Mazeguy and after about an hour or so I finally settled on the perfect one... Stickies 5.2a is brilliant for me because it meets my two basic "must haves" for anything that occupies my desktop space (a highly sought after position) it has to have the ability to be minimized and restored quickly and easily, and I must be able to personalise it... mostly for easy spotting in my desktop clutter smiley © Mazeguy Now personally, the amazingly cool main features of Stickies 5.2a that are right up my alley are...
• they roll up and down (double click), show all is a single click and a right click gives you a new stickie
• stickies do exactly that... they stick and as such are there on reboot... no need to hunt the suckers downsmiley © Mazeguy
• you can customise font, colours and save styles, there's also Stickies Skins available
my ruler help file made with Stickies 5.2a by Zhorn Software• they sit and play nicely together, snapping to each others edges to keep neat and tidy
• they can be transferred via network, SMTP or MAPI, play sound on arrival
• can be hidden
• act as reminders (with an alarm if you so like)
• on and on it goes.... (oh! I almost forgot... it's also FREE!)
