Computer Clean Boot
A Clean Boot is handy tool to have when you're trying to troubleshoot error messages, problems, glitches or seemingly possessed computers as it disables startup programs, setting, drivers etc allowing you have a poke around and see what's going on. You'll loose some of the functions during this process but when you restart your computer under Normal Startup all the options will of course be reinstated as with your original settings. If the error/problem you're trying to track down doesn't happen in Clean Boot state then one by one enable the settings under Selective Startup (via msconfig, General tab) with a reboot in between.

How to Clean Boot
Click Start
Click Run
In the Open box type msconfig
Hit OK
This will launch System Configuration Utility
Select the General tab
Check the Radio button beside Selective startup
Uncheck all the boxes for
System.ini files
Win.ini files
Load static VxD
Load Startup Group items
Load Environment variables
Select the Startup tab
Put a check beside *StateMgr
Hit Ok
When you're prompted to restart, hit Yes

After your computer has restarted
Click Start
Click Run
In the Open box type msconfig
Hit OK
This will launch System Configuration Utility again
Select the General tab, make sure all the check boxes are still cleared, this lets you know that you have in fact done a 'clean boot'

How to Return from a Clean Boot State
Click Start
Click Run
In the Open box type msconfig
Hit OK
This will launch System Configuration Utility
Select the General tab
Check the Radio button beside Normal startup
Hit Ok
When you're prompted to restart, hit Yes
