In my pursuit of Nurse Jackie's scarf I've learnt a few things, and not just about crochet...
1. There is an excellent thread on ravelry.com about Nurse Jackie's Scarf, you'll need a Ravelry account to see it, but after you've signed up, swing by KathiKraftyzales projects: Nurse Jackie Scarf for some great photos to set you on your way.
2. If you decide to follow the bullion (flower / circle) track and need a (visual) hand with the stitch take a peek at the following YouTube videos:
Art of Crochet by Teresa: How to Make the Crochet Bullion or Roll Stitch
Art of Crochet by Teresa: Crochet Bullion Flower
3. while poking around various crochet sites I found "scrumble" (free form crochet)... too cool!
I've fallen in love with the work of Prudence Mapstone, explore her amazing scrumbles and more on flickr freeform by prudence.
4. sometimes "close" is in fact "close enough"
As much as I love Nurse Jackie's scarf, after poking around so many crochet possibilities I eventually opted for creative license and decided to boldly stray from the path.
In my own "I've mastered 1 crochet stitch and have to YouTube it every time" way I ventured forth with 2 x 100gm balls of Moda Vera Akala wool (so soft!), the basic concept of Caron: Mesh Scarf with Posies and my youtube playlist Elissa - Crochet Scarf.

5. sometimes "imperfect" is in fact perfect
Armed with a sense of humour, [quite] a few long winter nights, a nice warm bed, numerous cups of milo, a heap of unraveling and far too many youtube tutorials to list I managed to crochet both 100gm balls... ^5 me! I now have a fabulous scarf (great length) that I am extremely proud of <insert sense of humour> some of the holes (I'm sure these should have a technical crocheting name) are large, some small, some wonky, some are just flat out laughable and to top it all off while I started with 12 loopy bits (another technical name...) I actually closed with 13 which in my opinion is uniquely lucky ;)
Due to my newbie crochet / wool status my glorious scarf has spent the last 10 days proudly hanging over my wardrobe door quite simply because I had no idea if it would stretch and I didn't want to proceed with adding a "fringe" only to find that a few outings later I had became a human broom... so I tugged, pulled, yanked and pinged my way through the ensuing days and with not a hint of increased length on the horizon last night I ventured onto the flower stage...
After trolling my way through Over 100 Free Crocheted Flowers Patterns and finally ended up back at youtube with Art of Crochet by Teresa: Crochet Flower - How to Add Rounds where I followed (to the best of my ability ;) the first flower, as soon as I added the back petals I was in serious trouble, I suspect my wool was too think (having changed to Basics entwine: Cream, needle size 7mm?) so I switched to plan b and headed off to my old button cake tin and found 8 vintage leather buttons which just screamed out to be used... so use I did and IMHO, when combined with the scarf and the flower they look awesome!
