little bit Kiwi Toll Road

Note to self: make the effort to drag bum in car and head to "New Zealand's first free flow electronic toll road" which opened on 25th January of this year.

why? because I have no life and it's NZ's first Free-flow electronic (via car registration) tolling booth that's in place to help fund the expansion of the Northern Motorway which bypasses Orewa, thus easing traffic congestion. Personally I always liked going through Orewa, it's a great place to stretch your legs, grab some great food and top-up the coffee bucket.

If you opt for a packed lunch and opt to take the toll road it will cost you NZ$2.00 (payable within 3 days), which in my opinion is an awkward amount to pay either before or after the event. Fair enough if you are travelling the route frequently, but for those of us who just want to take it for a test drive how about opening up another lane with buckets placed along the shoulder so that we can just hurl coins out the window instead...

My $2 road user charge will cost me an extra $0.80 for a statement (printed), $2.30 for an additional statement (if I misplace the first?), $2.20 if they have to send me a notice requesting payment and $40.00 for an Infringement Notice fee on an unpaid toll charge.

Hopefully I will remember to use the payment points... I'm not holding my breath though and would still prefer the bucket option...
