Here's a really quick step by step (pictures included!) for all you MSN Messenger users... myself included ;-) who want the take the smiley/emoticon craze to your email messages.. again I included myself in that statement ;-) If you think it can't be done I'm here to tell you it can.. the main reason behind the "can't be done" folk is a setting issue.. it's seems they're running their "compose" feature with Rich Text Editor set to off.. a simple flip of the drop down menu corrects this :-)
EOB.. (End of Babble)

NOTE: if you're using MSN Explorer as you're browser please read [Using MSN Explorer?]

Make your way to [www.hotmail.com] and you'll find yourself greeted with Hotmail's new "facelift"..

Login as per any other day and hit the Compose Tab...

Now here's the setting that causes the confusion from the "can't be done" folk..
Hit the Tools dropdown menu (as shown below) and you'll see a list of options.. Tools, Spell Check etc.. the one we're interested in is Rich-Text Editor, now this is why ppl get confused.. the menu states Rich-Text Editor OFF.. which in fact means that's it ON!

Yes I know it's confusing for some of you as off usually means it's off and on that it's on but this is not the case here. It states OFF so that you can select to turn it OFF and when it it reads as Rich-Text Editor ON it's so you an select to turn it on.... following me here? Image the RTE features is ON and the setting states ON to show you that it's enable to ON... how the heck would you turn it off ;-) You'd need an entirely menu solely dedicated to RTE On and Off :-) EOB...

If your RTE is set correctly you'll see the control menu (shown below)
Select the smiley from the menu.. btw it's only my humble opinion but the smiley doesn't suit a nose.. the eyebrows can stay but I vote the nose goes next time round ;-)

and you be presented with the Emoticons Menu

Type your burble and where you want to insert a smiley/emoticon
hit the Smiley on the control menu
then select the emoticon from the menu..

tada that simple :-)
